Powermatic 1285 12" Helical Head Jointer 3hp, 3PH, 230/460V
This 12" jointer offers big capacity and performance in a machine that is loaded with features. Large center-mounted fence assembly adjusts easily via rack and pinion system with ram lock. Preset stops on the fence body allow for fast angle set-up at 45° in and out, and a positive stop for perfect 90° angles.
The parallelogram design keeps the table in close proximity to the cutterhead for improved finish and allows for a fast depth of cut adjustment. This design also ensures the tables remain perfectly parallel even after years of tough duty. Choose either the standard three-knife cutterhead or the solid steel Helical cutterhead. The helical system makes fast work of knife changing and never needs adjustment.
Features
- Helical cutterhead with 42 two sided carbide inserts for fast knife changes with no adjustments and a quiet clean cut
- Large 12" x 84" precision ground cast iron table surface for heavy-duty work
- Parallelogram design for close table-to-cutterhead proximity and fast depth of cut adjustments
- Rack and pinion adjustable cast iron fence assembly for smooth fence positioning without play
- Table "lips" on both sides of cutterhead aid in noise reduction

Maintenance Tips
-
Routine Cleaning:
- Clean the tables, fence, and surrounding areas regularly with a soft cloth or vacuum to remove dust, wood chips, and debris.
- Use compressed air to clean the dust collection system to avoid blockages.
-
Inspect and Maintain Helical Cutterhead:
- Check the helical cutterhead for any dull or damaged inserts. Rotate or replace the inserts as necessary to maintain optimal cutting performance.
- Clean the cutterhead and surrounding components to prevent resin or buildup that could impair cutting efficiency.
-
Lubricate Parallelogram Mechanism:
- Lubricate the parallelogram mechanism and bed rails to ensure smooth table adjustments.
- Regularly inspect the adjustment handles for proper operation and ensure they are securely tightened.
-
Inspect the Fence and Alignment:
- Ensure the fence is aligned with the table and securely locked into place during operation.
- Clean the fence regularly, inspect it for damage, and adjust as needed to maintain square alignment with the table.
-
Motor and Electrical System Maintenance:
- Verify that the motor is operating smoothly and free of excessive vibration or noise.
- Inspect electrical wiring, connections, and the power switch for any signs of wear or damage. Ensure the system is properly wired for your voltage (230/460V).
-
Dust Collection System:
- Inspect the dust collection port and hose for any blockages. Clean the system to maintain efficient dust extraction.
- Empty the dust collection container regularly to prevent overflow and maintain optimal suction.
-
Check and Adjust Table Alignment:
- Periodically check that the infeed and outfeed tables are level and parallel to the cutterhead to ensure smooth, accurate cuts.
- Adjust the tables if necessary to maintain proper alignment.
-
Inspect for Loose Bolts and Fasteners:
- Regularly inspect all fasteners, bolts, and screws for tightness. Tighten any loose components to ensure stability during operation.
- Pay special attention to areas such as the bed, fence, and cutterhead.
-
Motor Voltage and Phase Settings:
- Double-check that the motor's voltage and phase settings are correctly configured (230/460V and 3-phase) to ensure safe and efficient operation. Consult an electrician if adjustments are needed.
